Professional Seminar: Does AI Really "Understand" Humans?
In an era where large language models like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude are becoming increasingly popular, a very interesting question is: Do AI systems really understand language, or are they just simulating comprehension through statistical samples?
In order to bring a profound academic perspective on this issue, Phenikaa School of Information Technology organizes a scientific seminar with the topic:
✨ Do AI Systems Really Understand? Common Sense, Language, and What LLMs Can (and Cannot) Do
The seminar will focus on discussing the capabilities of large language models in aspects often associated with human cognition such as: common sense reasoning, social cognition, and self-related language. Through the Machine Psychology approach, the speaker will share how to evaluate these capabilities, and point out cases where AI demonstrates convincing cognitive behavior, but also has certain limitations.
🎙 Speaker: Prof. Pietro Perconti
Philosophy of Mind, Department of Cognitive Science, University of Messina, Italy
⏰ Time: 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2026
📍 Location: Seminar space, Phenikaa School of Computing, Floor 23 - A9
The seminar promises to open up many interesting discussions about artificial intelligence, language, perception and the boundary between "simulation" and "understanding" in today's AI systems.
Sincerely invite interested teachers, researchers, practitioners and students to attend!
